Maitreyee Shitole, a commercial pilot from Pune, recently made headlines for her heroic actions in safely landing an Air India Express flight after a hydraulic failure. The flight, traveling from Trichy to Sharjah, encountered technical issues that could have led to a disaster. Thanks to the coordination between Shitole, the co-pilot, Air Traffic Control, and the Airport Director, the plane circled for two hours to burn fuel before making a safe emergency landing back at Trichy Airport. Shitole's calm and expertise saved the lives of 140 passengers on board, drawing widespread praise from aviation professionals and passengers alike.
Shitole holds a commercial pilot license from both India and New Zealand, having undergone training at Mainland Aviation College, Dunedin. Her quick thinking and skill under pressure have been compared to the feat performed by Captain Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger, highlighting the crucial role she played in preventing panic and ensuring safety.
